The break-even price assumes your entered sale costs stay fixed. It is rounded up to the next cent; your market's permitted price increments may differ.
How are profit and return calculated?
Total purchase cost is purchase price × shares + purchase costs. Net sale proceeds are sale price × shares − sale costs. Profit or loss is the difference between those amounts. Divide it by total purchase cost and multiply by 100 to get the percentage return. The break-even sale price is (total purchase cost + sale costs) ÷ shares.
What if you buy 20 shares at $50 and sell at $60?
Assume $5 in purchase costs and $5 in sale costs. The $1,000 purchase value becomes $1,005 in total cost. Selling for $1,200 leaves $1,195 after sale costs. The resulting gain is $190, a return of 18.91% on the amount invested. With those fixed costs, the break-even sale price is $50.50 per share.
Can I use my average purchase price?
Yes, if the price represents the whole share quantity entered here. Partial sales, prior disposals, and your brokerage's cost-basis method can make your account statement differ from this simple example. To see how an additional purchase changes your average price, use our average cost calculator.
What is not included?
The calculator does not automatically include dividends, currency conversion, borrowing costs, holding periods, or tax rules. You may enter known sale transaction costs in the sale-cost field, but this result is not a tax-reporting calculation. Prices are entered manually; no live quote is fetched.
This is arithmetic for an assumed trade, not a recommendation to sell or a guarantee of returns. Your entries are not sent to or stored on a calculation server.
